The road took us inland. We covered a lot of ground today and the landscape changed considerably from the bird watchers paradise we had spent the night at. Rounding a corner, I took in the scene ahead; a pothole, some trash, a car in my lane, a horse carcass, a cactus tree… Huh, a cactus tree? What’s that doing here? I thought we were in the tropics. Half an hour later, it looked and felt like we were back in the Sonora Desert. We passed towns and bridges with names like Rio Seco 1 and Puente Auxiliar Rio Seco 2. In Mexico, the bridges have names. We got searched for the first time today at military checkpoints, twice. We’ve passed many checkpoints along the way and they had all waved us through. Sometimes they even smiled but not these guys. They wanted to see and know everything. It slowed us down, but we still made it into the border state of Tuxtla Gutierrez. I had a college roommate who lived here for awhile and thought of him as we rode. We were out of the desert now. The road paralleled a misty mountain range and we crossed a number of clean rivers and streams. There were a lot of nice ranches along the way. It was a nice and I hoped Guatemala was like this.

Alfonso! These pics are horrible. What's the flash for? From now on we need to look at my staff before we resort to yours.
